This is typical Microsoft. By using this method, parameters for the External Data Range inserted next to the stock symbol cannot be edited, although you can still control the refresh rate. I prefer to use the Data\Existing Connections\MSN MoneyCentral Investor Stock Quotes method to pull in a data range that allows you to assign the value for refresh to the cell that contains the stock symbol, e.g., GOOG, and allow the range to be updated when the value changes, e.g., to AAPL for example.

I believe MS allows up to 150 symbols using this method whereas Yahoo!Finance allows up to 200 symbols to be pulled into a worksheet. I found a cool VBA procedure on the Internet that works well for this purpose. Happy to share (will credit the original source) if John approves.

I haven't read every blog note but Ken's recent blog, Feb 7, makes me suggest a similar method to create a dynamic range without VBA. Using Ken's data, the data is on worksheet "Data3". The data range is in column A. Cell A1 has a header.
Go to name manager, and create a named range for the data in column A. Call it "MyRange" or whatever. Put the following formula in the "Refers To" area when creating the named range:
=OFFSET(Data3!$A$2,0,0,COUNTA(Data3!,$A:$A)-1)
The formula assumes you have a header in cell A1, so you start at cell $A$2 - lock this in place.

I tested this for data in an Excel Table, and it works fine. Each time you add or delete a record in the table, the range adjusts correctly.

John,

Over the years I have purchased nine of your books. I went ahead and per-ordered two more. My thinking is I might learn something, but more importantly, I plan on giving them away as gifts so someone else may benefit from your vast knowledge.

I agree that the printed book is not as popular as it once was, but I for one get so much more from reading the printed book vs an electronic copy, maybe it's because it's my age.

The reason I like the printed book is it's easier on my eyes, I can curl up and read it where I want (yes I know they have Kindles and such), but it's just not the same.

So now the 64K question, what do you think about Excel 2013 (in depth)? Personally I think it's the best Excel yet. I hated 2007, but 2010 was much improved, and I can see a lot of good things in 2013.

Enough - Already.

Bottom line. - Congratulations on the new books. I wish you the best of luck and know the sales will be impressive.

Before WYSIWYG you would have to use additional cells to make lines to separate the values.

My last version of 1-2-3 was the WK4 format, I think it was version 5.0. You could make nice menus (like Excel), and it was great, but alas Excel over took it and I switched around 1995-1996 and never looked back.
For some reason, I just spent a lot more time getting this one as near perfect as a computer book can get. I've never spent so much time working on the minor details. But when I hold it my hand, I'm sure I'll find dozens of errors. That's how it always goes.

Office 2013 is about integrating the web with Office applications that are already familiar to users. This shifts the development focus from a proprietary language (Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications) to web-based languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.) that enable you to use your web development skills for Office development.

You also can't refer to table ranges in other (closed) workbooks - admittedly you can't do this with dynamic ranges either, but it just added to my dissatisfaction with Tables.
